[TechWeb] News on November 3, according to Taiwanese media reports, TSMC has made new progress in building a 5nm plant in the United States, and TSMC is recruiting talents in the United States.

TSMC has released many positions on LinkedIn, a social networking site for the workplace, in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, including 3D IC packaging R&D engineers, manufacturing supervisors, and factory mechanical and electrical engineers.

Last week, there were media reports that the current head of TSMC’s technology division Wu Yihuang will be the director of TSMC’s new plant in the United States, and Wu has already begun work related to the start of construction in 2021.

TSMC’s deputy manager of global affairs, Peter Clevelan, said in an article last month that he discussed with Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and Phoenix City Mayor Kate Gallego about setting up a 5nm advanced wafer fab, including municipal, state and federal officials. The factory settings are in step with TSMC.

In May of this year, TSMC announced that it intends to build and operate an advanced wafer fab in the United States under the common understanding and commitment support of the U.S. Federal Government and Arizona.

TSMC said that the plant to be set up in Arizona will use the company's 5nm process technology to produce semiconductor chips, with a planned monthly production capacity of 20,000 wafers. TSMC said the fab will start construction in 2021 and mass production will begin in 2024. From 2021 to 2029, TSMC’s expenditures (including capital expenditures) on this project are approximately US$12 billion.

Founded in 1987, TSMC is the world's largest foundry semiconductor manufacturing plant. Its customers include Apple and Qualcomm.
