Recently, Nexperia, an expert in the field of basic semiconductor devices, announced that it will substantially increase its manufacturing capacity and global investment in research and development in 2021. The new investment is consistent with the company's development strategy. Last year, Nexperia's parent company Wingtech Technology pledged to invest RMB 12 billion (US$1.85 billion) to build a 300mm (12-inch) power semiconductor wafer plant in Lingang, Shanghai. The fab will be put into operation in 2022, with an estimated annual output of 400,000 wafers.

Nexperia's plans this year include improving production efficiency and implementing new 200mm technology at its European wafer fabs in Hamburg, Germany and Manchester, UK. The Hamburg fab will also increase its investment in new technologies for wide band gap semiconductor manufacturing. The company promised to increase R&D investment to about 9% of total sales to fully support the development of new products. Nexperia recently opened new global R&D centers in Penang, Malaysia and Shanghai, China, while expanding existing R&D facilities in Hong Kong, Hamburg and Manchester.

The company will also strengthen the testing and assembly capabilities of its Nexperia wafer fabs located in Guangdong, China, Seremban, Malaysia, and Capuyao, Philippines, including the implementation of advanced automation and system-in-package (SIP) technology capabilities.

Achim Kempe, Chief Operating Officer of Nexperia, said: Increasing automotive electrification, 5G communications, Industry 4.0, and mainstream GaN-based designs are getting better and will drive the demand for power semiconductors in 2021 and in the future. Nexperia (Anshi Semiconductor) delivers more than 90 billion products each year and is the semiconductor manufacturer with the largest shipments. The new global investment will ensure that we continue to provide the technology and manufacturing capabilities required to deliver products in large quantities to meet future growth needs.

Zhang Xuezheng, CEO of Wingtech and Nexperia, added: Since Wingtech acquired Nexperia in 2019, we have been committed to continuous investment to support ambitious growth plans and take full advantage of the synergies between the two companies. Following the announcement of the new 300mm fab and opening of design centers in Penang and Shanghai last year, we will continue to invest to support our global growth and expand our business scope and market share.
